The Rainbow Bridge

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
when their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met,
together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
the time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
and then, side-by-side, they cross over . . . together.

Harmony
2004 - March 2006

(in the back, behind her sister Hannah)
Harmony was one of the feral cats in my feral colony. I found her dead today in the storage room, on a shelf. I don't know why or how she died, but I hope she's resting in peace, and enjoyed her time in Vermont, though it was short. She was from New Jersey, and had only been here for a few months.
Rest in Peace Harmony

Kittens in the Woods, by Jenn O'Guin, 2006

I once heard a story, a long time ago
'bout two little kittens, who's names I don't know
Went running one day, one bright sunny day
Got lost in the woods, I've heard people say

And when it was night, so sad was their fright
The moon went down, and the stars gave no light
They mewed and they cried, the meowed and they sighed
Those two little kittens, then laid down and died

Along came a robin, who's breast was so red
And strawberry leaves, he laid over their heads
He sang and he cried, he then he turned and took flight
Those two little kittens, had laid down and died

But Goddess was watching, and to heaven she sent
those two little kittens, yes that's where they went
They romped and they played, in heaven joy came
Those two little kittens, now in heaven joy rang
