NOTICE: I may have another cat up for adoption soon. I was asked to cat-sit a sweet young black and white cat for a few days, while nursing a tail injury she incurred, until her owner returned from a family trip. He was due back several days ago, and my calls to his home go unanswered. This sweet girl may have been DUMPED on me. I will have more info next week, as I do not want to act too soon, as he MAY just be delayed due to the bad weather lately. I currently have NO money invested into her, so she will be available CHEAP for FAST placement, as we were already over-crowded! Call if interested in her! Her name is Volaria.

History: Whitey was left to fend for himself several years ago in the cold Vermont winters. He's always come to my home upon occasion to eat from the bowls I leave out for all the neighborhood cats. Over the summer of 2006 discovered where he lived - an old abandoned house that has been empty for a year. His family moved away and left him behind. We had become good buddies by fall 2006, and so I decided that this winter should be his last winter outside fending for himself!

Whitey is about 6 years old (or at least that's how long I've known him). He is a neutered male, and was the neighborhood alpha male tom before his neutering/rescue. He has the big block head you'd expect to see on a seasoned adult male, and he is stunning in person. He is just a handsome cat! He's all white, except on the very top of his head, he has two gray spots that run together between his ears and down the back of his neck. The markings are similar to what you'd expect on a Turkish Van, except they are gray, not orange.

Whitey is a sweet boy, though he does play rough. It was hard to get good pictures of him before I rescued him, because I couldn't get him to stay away long enough to snap and good pictures. He was SO attention starved, you could tell he used to be someone's pet, as went to go feed him, he just adored me, and loved all over me, purring and so happy to see me.

12/22/06: Whitey has been sponsored for $75 by Kayte, and has now been taken into rescue and neutered. Thanks Kayte!

Unfortunately, he had some pretty severe complications after his neuter surgery and had to be returned to the hospital for another day and for additional testing. He came home from his surgery, and later that night began to violently vomit and have severe diarrhea. This is a very unusual reaction after a neuter, so he went back to the hospital where he was put on IV fluids, and tested for possible causes. In that process, it was determined that Whitey is in GREAT health, his blood panel came back perfect, he was negative for FELV and FIV, and he has no parasites! That's all good, unfortunately, it also meant that his illness is still a complete mystery! He is getting better every day though, and we expect no further complications. While at the vet we discovered he really dislikes dogs, so a DOG FREE home would be best.

It may be that he is sensitive to the pain medication, so it was discontinued. Or it could be stress related. We just don't know.

I would advise anyone who adopts him to be REALLY careful if he ever needs to be sedated in the future, as it appears the may be very sensitive to anesthesia!

12/23/06: We want to say a big thank you to Lance Linimon for donating $200.00 towards Whitey's vet bill! Thank you Lance!

05/10/07: I guess an update is really over-due! Whitey is doing great, and has really settled in as part of our family. He gets along good with other cats, so long as they respect that he is the dominant male of the house (our 7 pound Siamese mix girl DOES have the TOP spot in the household, of course)! Over the past months, several things have become apparent:
  1. Whitey is a very sensitive cat, he gets bouts of red inflammed eye, pink irritated skin, and on and off diarrhea due to food changes. He will do best in a home that can maintain him on a steady diet of ONE flavor of food, long term. He LOVES wet food, and he eats kibble here as well, but our ever-changing flavors of wet food seem to upset his system. He does best on a chicken-based diet free of fish and corn. That isn't a big deal, and is easily accomodated with many commercial cat foods. His favorites are Merrick's Grammy's Pot Pie canned, and California Natural Chicken & Rice kibble. I am going to require that his adopter be willing to provide for this need. Merrick cat food is NOT cheap.
  2. Whitey is dominant. Whitey quickly established his order in the household as alpha male. He will do best in a home with aloof, passive, but confident cats who can give him his space, but not fear him. Either that or with a pack of very assertive Siamese cats, as our meezer girl here totally has Whitey under control. Whitey is also occasionally apt to swat at his human if you annoy him. He's not real fast, so usually it is easily dodged, BUT, he's strong and has sharp claws, and wont allow nail trimming, so I must require that the adopter NOT have any children in the home.
  3. Whitey is prone to obesity. He needs to be on a diet. He weighs over 17 pounds at this point. He sleeps all day and night. He would love nothing more than a comfortable place to sleep. He doesn't like to be picked up, and he hates being held; however, he will come to you on his own and sit by you on the sofa or bed. He likes to be petted when HE wants to be petted, and he will come to YOU when he's ready for affection. Mainly, he just wants to SLEEP - and eat. A home that wouldn't push him beyond that expectation would be ideal. He will be a lovely item of expensive home decor! Occasionally, he may even honor you with his attention.
  4. Whitey will occasionally require some probiotics when his diarrhea is flaring up. His adopter needs to keep some on hand at all times. He prefers the Purina Forti-Flora powder, and eats it redily mixed in with his canned food. These flare-ups should be minimal to non-existant if he diet remains constant and doesn't change. Whitey prefers to drink from a cat fountain with moving water. It is important that he drink enough water when he gets diarrhea, so we must ask his adopter to invest in a cat fountain. Again, his bouts of diarrhea will be less often if he stays on a steady diet of ONE FLAVOR of food.
  5. Whitey is impossible to medicate. He also wont allow ear cleaning, tooth brushing, eye cleaning, claw trimming, or anything other than baths. Yes, go figure, he's terrified of a wet washcloth, but does FINE in the sink with a sprayer! Weird cat! He may need to go to the vet every 3-6 months for ear cleaning (if you can't get it done yourself), and at least once a year for dental care. If you sit on him, you can usally get the eye boogers if you're quick, and catch him when he is in a deep sleep.
  6. Whitey may be hard to place. That's OK, we love him! Eventually, someone will see past his "issues" and see the GREAT cat underneath it all and grab him up!
We are asking a $75 adoption fee, simply to ensure he is going to a home that can afford his food. We've invested hundreds into him, but we realize he's not purebred, or even that much of a charmer. He is neutered already, and has had some vaccines (we have a very minimal approach to those here, and he may have severe reactions to them, so minimal is best in his cases anyways).
