"Routine prevaccinal screening for FeLV has inherent statistical limitations owing to the magnification of false-positive test errors by the low prevalence of FeLV viremia in the general cat population. Positive ELISA test results obtained in a screening program should be interpreted with caution, because a high proportion--approximately 72%--of such are likely to be false-positive results. On the other hand, routine screening is an excellent method for ruling out FeLV viremia, because a false-negative result is likely to be obtained in only 1/1,000 tests."

The natural resistance to FeLV infection in cats older than a year of age is very well established among feline retrovirologists. While
susceptibility to FIV remains constant throughout life, that simply is not
the case with FeLV. While it is NOT impossible to infect an adult cat,
the inoculate of FeLV has to be really significant (or repeated) in order
to infect. This has been shown in virtually all FeLV vaccine challenge studies
involving adult cats. It is MOST difficult to assess efficacy of an FeLV
vaccine when using adults as controls... because they just don't get
infected. This phenomenon is related to T-cell maturity in the individual
cat and the interaction of those lymphocytes with specific epitopes of
FeLV. (quoted in part from a research journal)

Baypamun - Inactivated Parapox Ovis Virus (click here for text if website doesn't work)
In December 2003, Bayer HealthCare AG sold its rights to the Baypamun® (immunomodulator) brand to Pfizer for a total of €32 million. This may explain it's seeming dissappearance since that time. Throughout my research in tracking down this mystery, I discovered that Pfizer has developed a new Parapox Ovis Virus Immunomodulator brand called Zylexis. It is my belief that this may be the exact same drug under a new brand name.

A well-respected member of the FELV group states that her cat "Bailey's HCT was at 15% at his lowest, and his anemia was NON-REGENERATIVE, confirmed with a bone marrow aspirate. After 6 weeks on EPOGEN and prednisolone, his HCT was at 40%. When he died of the undiagnosed cancer months later it was still normal at 33%."
